Design brief
To design a renewable energy powered and portable water pump that can provide a viable alternative to diesel-driven ones
Target user group
Small and medium-scale Indian farmers in Bihar state
Mandatory requirements
- Portable
- Robust and locally servicable
- irrigate one hectare
- Maximum cost one lakh Indian rupees
- Ground water table at five meter depth
Concept
The concept was inspired from the working principle of siphon
Principle
The siphon refers specifically to a tube in an inverted U shape which causes a liquid to flow uphill, above the surface of the reservoir, without pumps, powered by the fall of the liquid as it flows down the tube under the pull of gravity, and is discharged at a level lower than the surface of the reservoir it came from
Description
- The pump is portable by disengaging the suction pipe connected to the well and can be moved using roller
- Robust under all climatic conditions except freezing temperatures and probably never requires an service
- Total cost of the entire system is ultimately cheap using simple components like a tank and usual pipes of the irrigation system depending on the farmer’s requirement ( approx. Rs. 10,000
maximum)
- The amount of water displaced per minute will depend on the height of ground water source and related dimensions
Justification
- This is conceptual design and needs further research
- When compared to the diesel pump this has low discharge rate, but this factor is negligible when compared with no fuel consumption, no smoke emission, less
maintenance, and no power
- This is ultimately simple just like operation of a faucet adapting to farmer’s routine
- Very cheap than any other existing pumping system to date making it affordable for the farmer without any subsidies from government
- No technological advancements are required, the basic factor to be maintained is the dimension which must be appropriate according to the ground water level
