The Project "Design of 4 wheel steering system" aims to reduce human effort to a greater extent which one applies while driving a car. The concept came into mind when i saw one of my friend struggling to park his car. The amount of steering effort is just tremendous. The car under consideration for this project is Honda Civic. We have installed a similar rack & pinion system for the rear wheels too, but we have installed 2 racks for the rear wheels which are connected by a plate enabling the pinion to shift the racks with the help of a motor. This shifting of pinion is decided by the speed of the vehicle. For low speeds the rear wheels have to be out of phase while at high speed rear wheels have to be in-phase with respect to the front wheels. Also, by this arrangement we have obtained better steering ratio giving a better control on car at higher as well as lower speeds. Also, the turning circle radius of the vehicle is reduced drastically by 64.4% as that of the 2 wheel steering.
This project does not have adverse economical implications as at larger scale, this system will cost nominal to the customer, thus giving the scope to be used by a large group of car users.
