The use of valves in internal combustion engine is mandatory since the conception of four stroke engine. There are many different types of valves but the ones used in I.C engines are the poppet type.

The valve shall be split into two, Solenoid actuators could be used for the opening and closing of the valves. They shall be actuated by the pressure differences in the manifold so that each half operates separately.

By controlling the opening and closing time of each half the mass flow rate is increased and better turbulence could be achieved.

This also could improve the efficiency during idling and part load conditions in a SI engine. Only one half shall be open at the prescribed inlet manifold pressure.

At rated speed both halves of the valve open and close in unison and thus optimal performance of the engine will not be affected.
