Biochar Based Intelligent Filtering System for Textile Effluent Treatment

Textile industries and their effluents are the leading cause for 35% of the global water pollution. These effluents, which are a complex mixture of chemicals, Azo dyes, detergents, and other contaminants, pose a serious threat to the environment. Heavy metals, organic substances, and other contaminants that are harmful to aquatic life and potentially contaminate neighbouring water bodies. The problem of trash disposal, specifically in the textile industries, is resolved by finding a way to use tomato peel for water treatment. With functional groups like -NH2, -OH, and -COOH, pectin, carotene, and phenolic compounds found in tomato peels serve as adsorption sites for a variety of contaminants, particularly cationic pollutants. The usage of tomato-based Biochar has higher adsorption characteristics removing the high toxicity heavy metals and dyes without affecting the outer environment. Activated carbon and tomato peels were integrated with each other utilizing biochar technology. The effluents were boiled up while the vapors formed where adsorbed through the Biochar filters and then condensed as water, making it a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach for addressing the challenges posed by textile effluents using tomato waste as Biochar filters. Overall, this system is economical and environment friendly treating wastewater before releasing it into unpolluted natural waterbodies.

OBJECTIVES :

Focusing on the textile sectors they lead a cause of 38% of the water pollution affecting the human resources as well as the aquatic lives. These effluents contain mostly Dyes, heavy metals and other dissolved salts. While the existing methods are high cost and are non-renewable one having higher man power. While Using our tomato waste-based Biochar filter incorporated with activated carbon made from coconut coir waste act as a sustainable source balancing the environmental impacts without affecting the renewable cycles.

  • Tomato pomace utilization: Since tomato waste were collected up in larger amounts mainly in food and cosmetics industry. Thus, to address up these waste utilisations, we came up with tomato waste-based Biochar filters which works upon the mechanism of air based adsorption, well on cationic activities like heavy metals, dyes etc.
  • Sustainable Solution for Heavy Metal Removal: Our foremost objective is to remove heavy metals from textile effluent approaching in a manner that is both eco-friendly and sustainable. Heavy metals like chromium, lead, and cadmium are prevalent in textile processes, posing dire threats to the environment and public health.
  • Breaking the Dye Barrier: Synthetic dyes have been a symbol of vibrancy in textiles, but their environmental legacy is far from colourful. Thus, our motive is to effectively address the challenge of dye contamination.
  • Eco-Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness: By repurposing agricultural waste into effective biochar filters, we aim to provide a financially viable solution for textile manufacturers. This means minimizing the need for costly chemicals and energy-intensive treatments, reducing operational costs, and ensuring long-term economic sustainability.
  • Sustainable Industry Standard: We aspire to redefine the industry's approach to wastewater treatment, establishing sustainability as the heart of textile production. By offering practical, scalable, and positive environmental impacts.
