Wave’s Inertial Electric Generator

The Wave’s inertial electric generator (WIEG) is a small linear electric generator in which a part is moving almost continuously based on a special sealed construction of some cylinder (with a Donut Fixed Neodymium Magnet) in cylinder (with double walls inside the copper coils to collect the generated current) using the inertial effect when floating on the sea wave in an up & down movement.

During the moving of the inside cylinder in the outside one, the magnetic field of the Neodymium Magnet interacts with the copper coils generating an electric current.

The operation of the WIEG module may be observed from the attached sketch. Some ballast on the bottom of each cylinder maintains the almost vertical position of the module. Of course that the WIEG module needs some experimental validation of the model.

The WIEG advantages:

  • does not need any anchorage on the sea bed;
  • do not involve any mechanical device;
  • simple construction suitable for mass production;
  • small operational costs;
  • relative small investment costs which may be significantly reduced on mass production;

A WIEG module is to be multiplied to form an assembly, like a “blanket” on the sea surface, with dimensions to be optimized pending on the module size, economics of the “blanket”, etc., allowing to obtain a more significant current amperage. A WIEG blanket may generate a more constant current taking benefit of the fact that some WIEG modules may be on the crest wave and others on the bottom elevation of the wave.

In case of hurricane/tempest, the WIEG blanket may sink to a certain depth to avoid extremely high/powerful waves, using a ballast reservoir attach to the WIEG Blanket which is filled with water. The coming back to the surface will be done by removing the water from the ballast reservoir using some compressed air bottles. The Air bottles can be then refilled during the usual maintenance operations.
