Horizontal K Type Configuration

Horizontal K type configuration is new type of configuration designed for an internal combustion engine.

In this configuration, 4 cylinders are present per crankpin in the shape of "K" with its vertical side parallel to the ground. The positioning of cylinders is based on the multi-body simulation results.

The novelty with this configuration is, it's a completely new design.

The designed configuration is better balanced as compared to existing Inline, V-type and W-type configuration. Also, frictional losses are least in the proposed configuration. This means more power can be extracted with the same amount of fuel supplied.

The center of gravity height of the K type configuration is less (more stable) and the configuration is compact due to 4 cylinders per crankpin.

This configuration finds its best application in places like marine applications, hyper cars, locomotives where 8, 12 or even 20 cylinders are required.

Due to its compact nature, the overall weight of the engine is reduced (with the same number of reciprocating and rotating parts).
