System for managing the route of unmanned aerial vehicles (RMS)

The proposed system aims to help ensure the safe movement of UAVs at infrastructure facilities where it is currently illegal for UAVs to fly, including airports.

Description of the RMS

Based on the system’s operating principle, the unmanned aerial vehicle cannot stray outside the boundaries of the designated air corridor. This restriction is ensured by attaching the UAV with a holding cable to a special ground mobile platform set up on a monorail that is laid along a preset route for the UAV. The UAV retains the ability to fly around, but the zone of its movement is confined to the length of the monorail and is restricted by the length of the holding cable (Fig. 1).

The RMS consists of the following key elements: the ground mobile platform, which goes on the monorail; the holding cable, which is attached at one end to the ground mobile platform and at the other end to the UAV (Fig. 1).

The system operates in the following way. On a monorail, laid along a preset route, there goes a special ground mobile platform, which can freely swing on the monorail. The unmanned aerial vehicle, which serves as a propulsor, is attached to the platform with a holding cable. When flying, the UAV draws the holding cable, making the mobile platform move along the monorail after the UAV. In this state, the UAV can move only along a preset route along the monorail, with any of its movements that can take it out of the DAC blocked by the holding cable. Thus, along with boosting the safety of the UAV’s movement, the system also helps resolve the objective of managing the UAV’s route.
