Our project is a low-cost mechanical ventilation device for Coronavirus patients and patients with respiratory diseases in general in resource-poor settings. The concept of the ventilator presses the bag valve mask (ambu bag) with an electric motor, which eliminates the need for a manual human respirator. The system has two modes, volume control mode and maximum pressure control mode. In the volume control mode, the volume of air per breath, the number of breaths per minute and inhalation to the exhalation ratio are determined by an easy-to-use system and the maximum pressure will depend on the lung stiffness. In the maximum pressure control mode, the maximum pressure in the lungs is set by the user and the tidal volume per breath will depend on lung stiffness. The prototype also contains an alarm to indicate the system's excess 40 cm H20 pressure and a pressure relief valve.
Our device is a low-cost, easy-to-use, automatic resuscitator that allows the doctors to follow up on multiple patients at the same time. This solution will improve the lack of respiratory equipment, the shortage of doctors and will decrease contact hours with patients and this will decrease the risk of infection. We managed to design and manufacture a low-cost, low-power and portable resuscitator that provides the essential ventilator features at a fraction of the cost of existing technology to be easy-to-manufacture with widespread rapid manufacturing tools—3D printers, CNC machines.
