Title: Electric Roads and Electric Charging Mobile Pods for continuous charging for EV’s
Objective: To help accelerate sustainable transportation by building an infrastructure for continuous on road charging for all EV’s.
Description:
The human crave for technological development is a never-ending process and so does the pollution. So, being an intelligent species on the planet we can at least adopt technologies which will help reduce the effect of pollution on the planet to a certain extent.
There is a tremendous amount of efforts being taken for developing Electric Vehicles. However, one of the biggest challenges is to turn people’s mind to buy EV’s, because of limited mile range (250-350) and longer charging time (50-70 min) per one full charge. These factors are considered while purchasing a car, so as to find a way over these factors here are my ideas which will play an important role.
To address these challenges, I would like to present two solutions:
1. Electric Roads for Continuous Charging:
The electric roads will enable continuous charging which can eliminate the charging time at the supercharging stations. By considering the number of EV’s in the future, E-Roads can accommodate number of EV’s as they will be charged on the road. So, no need to spend time and money on investing charging stations.
Figure- 1(a) shows a schematic of E-Road and the mechanism. The mechanism used which connects the car charging system to the electric grid on the road as shown in Fig. 1(b) is called as the Pantograph. The EV’s manufacturing companies would need to install this mechanism on the EV’s.
This model can be implemented in cities and on the interstate highways. For interstate highways, the E-roads can be built through certain distances, not necessary to cover all the distances. For ex. Chicago to Atlanta is 725 miles, so, minimum of 300-400 miles of E-roads can be built and divided over the total distance which is 725 miles.
The electricity required is supplied by the renewable energy resources such as Wind Turbines, Solar Farms, which is possible over the long distances.
The infrastructure can be built on the existing roads or separate lanes can be built for EV’s. Specific speed limits will be recommended to gain max charging levels.
2. Electric Charging Mobile Pods:
Mobile pods will help double the range of EV’s. It’s a two wheeled cart carrying a battery pack and can be pulled just like the campers. This pod will have a battery pack and a little storage space which will give the equal or more mile range as of the car. It will be designed considering aesthetic to look good behind the elegant EV’s. It can also be combined with a small tent camper for those who like to go distances for camping.
Fig. 2(a) shows pod with battery pack and small storage space and fig. 2(b) shows a small tent camper with a battery pack.
