According to the report of the World Health Organization (WHO) Ischemic heart disease and stroke are the world’s biggest killers, accounting for a combined 15 million deaths in 2013. These diseases have remained the leading causes of death globally in the last 15 years. Strokes are brain attacks. They occur when the blood supply to the brain becomes blocked. A stroke is a medical emergency that needs immediate medical attention. According to the American Stroke Association almost 80 percent of strokes are preventable if they are regularly treated. In addition to the medicines, physical movements such as exercising provides a major impact towards the treatment of stroke and it helps to stimulate the affected areas of the brain. Since their body parts are inactive they find difficulties in visiting the hospitals and in performing the exercises. So, they need a care taker for their basic needs. Our aim is to replace the need of a care taker for the exercising movements. So, we designed and developed a device called Mobaid (Mobile aided), a physical therapy device which gives the necessary exercising actions to the patients. Foremost objective of this design is to self-help the stroke patient in their rehabilitation through this automated device. Initially mobaid is designed to provide the exercising movements to the leg such as bending and stretching the knee which gives proper blood circulation to the legs. But the ultimate aim of this project is to provide elliptical movements to the legs of the patients so that they can obtain the proper gait pattern.

A crank and slider is a common, simple mechanism used to convert rotational motion into reciprocating linear motion, or motion that goes back and forth along a straight line. A crank is an arm attached at right angles to a rotating shaft by which reciprocating motion is imparted to or received from the shaft. It is used to convert circular motion into reciprocating motion, or vice versa. The arm may be a bent portion of the shaft, or a separate arm or disk attached to it. Attached to the end of the crank by a pivot is a rod, usually called a connecting rod. The end of the rod attached to the crank moves in a circular motion, while the other end is usually constrained to move in a linear sliding motion. There are two splints used in this device. To exercise the legs, the lower splint is made to fit to the legs. The splint is of very less weight and portable one. There is a groove like separation near the elbow for easy leg movements. This setup provides passive exercise for the legs of the stroke patients. After fixing the splint to the leg, the power supply is given to the motor which is fitted in this device. Now the dynamic splints move the legs to and fro. The device helps to regularize the blood circulation due to continual movement of the leg.
