This project sought to design and prototype a device and its software interface for applications like bicycle tracking within a university campus. The Wi-Fi tracker is a simple, portable, powered unit that logs data to a remote server enabling a tracking process to be executed. This design harnesses the Internet of Things concept using the ESP8266, a low cost, low power Wi-Fi chip, the heart of the device.
Problem Statement
1. Difficulty finding the bicycles
2. Difficulty planning to use bicycles along the route to class, work or any other place on & off campus
3. No way of tracking the bicycles
thus, The AU BikeShare program would benefit substantially if bicycles were trackable.
The Deliverable of teh design
2. Battery Powered unit with Energy Management function
3. Tracking/logging software application connected to a web logging database.
4. Capable of tracking accurately to 30m radius of a Wi-Fi access point
5. No Case!
The device met all the specified performance evaluation indicators. The tracking device can communicate with the software application. Evidence of this can been seen in the terminal logs. The estimated power draw was arbitrarily close to actual measured power draw. The web server is capable of storing log data in the database as the data can be seen on web interface in its raw format.
This design has a lot of potential and its application may well extend to other applications and environments outside of university campuses. Further design and research will be considered in the near future to prototype a commercially viable tracker.
