Metamaterials are artificial materials, engineered to have properties not found in nature. Metamaterials with negative parameters, such as permittivity, permeability, refractive index etc, were developed to enable unique and useful structures such as Mu-Negative Metamaterials (MNG), Epsilon-Negative Metamaterial (ENG), and Negative Index or Double Negative Metamaterials (DNG) with specific optical properties suitable for building optical devices.
I succeeded to design high-pass/band-pass optic filters with periodic structure based on these metamaterials (and a defect layer) which can tune on our desirable frequencies. I also designed tunable IR mirrors with proper reflection spectrum by metal-dielectric (MD) and metamaterials. Metamaterials are usually fabricated by simple Split-Ring Resonator (SRR) or simple Fishnet structures, so they are not complicated. Moreover, many sample of metamaterial nanostructures have been fabricated which shows that my structures are manufacturable. My structures are compound and nano-scale with proper transmission and reflection spectra which can utilize as lenses (for guiding optical waves into fiber), clad of optical fiber (for reflection), front and rear mirrors of lasers. I used MATLAB and COMSOL for analyzing, designing and simulating the above structures.
