The product is developed as an LED lamp fixture which uses an optical filter for blocking harmful blue light wavelengths in the homes to improve health of LED light users.

Blue light suppresses the release of melatonin which leads to sleep pattern defects and health problems. Scientists have unanimously claimed that exposure to bright light in the evening, especially blue light from artificial sources like LEDs leads to multiple health problems. Study after study has linked working the night shift and exposure to light at night to several types of cancer (breast, prostate), diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Collectively these diseases affect more than 100 million people worldwide. This poses a significant problem.

Research has shown that humans react more positively to fluorescent and incandescent lights which contain much less of the blue wavelength of light. Going back to those sources is an option but it would lead to increased energy usage while CFL lamps also harm the environment. The product we’ve created tackles both these problems simultaneously.

The product is an LED lamp fixture with IoT compatibility and an optical filter. A central unit which is the main controller can connect with multiple fixtures to automatically control when the optical filter is deployed. A small servo motor is used to control the deployment of the filter and it receives its signal from the central control unit. The central unit can be controlled and used through a smartphone app. It allows the user to set the time when they would want the automatic blue light filter to activate. It will also come with a override function in case the user is engaged in an activity which requires unfiltered light access.

The optical filter to be used can be either absorbing or dichroic type. As the latter would lead to a costlier product with more accurate frequency blocking control.

The manufacturing of the product is fairly straightforward with the bulk of the cost coming from the purchase of optical filters.

The use of the product would lead to big health benefits, energy savings as LED’s are the most efficient light source for homes and also would allow the industry to stay on the current standard for manufacturing LED’s that will also save money as it does away with the need to switch to an alternate light source or improved LED’s until it's financially more feasible.
