DIRECT LINEAR TO ROTARY DRIVE SYSTEM (DL2R)
THIS INVENTION PROVIDES A MEANS OF TRANSFERRING LINEAR MOTION INTO ROTARY MOTION IN AN ORDERLY FACTION WHERE THE OUTPUT IS CONSTANT, AND NOT ATTENUATED BY POWER LOSSES AND FLUCTUATIONS.
Standard means of converting linear motion into rotary motion is by applying a linear force to the lever arm of of a crank as in piston engines, or a foot pushing on the crank lever on a bicycle pedal. In each case the force applied to the rotating shaft will fluctuate from 0 at TDC to max at halfway and back to 0 at BDC varying with the PROJECTED length of the lever arm at different points of the motion causing a CONSTANTLY VARIABLE POWER OUTPUT AND LOSS. Engines require flywheels to dampen and mitigate these fluctuations.
Use of this novel invention, which incorporates one-way clutches into the drive system, provides a continuously CONSTANT lever arm, thereby the linear force is transformed into a constant NO-LOSS NON-FLUCTUATING rotational force.
On the PH VI PROTOTYPE, an inexpensively converted Trek bike, ANY motion of either pedal in EITHER DIRECTION will impart a forward motion; an additional benefit to those with physical limitations!
This easily manufactured design, which eliminates the 40% power loss occasioned by the above noted projected lever arm variations, will provide additional power and speed to bike riders and will be of benefit to the continually increasing number of recreational as well as serious bike riders.
