A New Idea for Hydrogen Combustion Engine Implementation

The basic motivation of this innovation is to use hydrogen as the fuel of the engine without using a very expensive and bulky hold-up tank for liquidized hydrogen storage.

A water tank will be used as the origin of the hydrogen. A pair of electrodes will be used inside the tank with more effective area exposing for ionizing the water and generating the oxygen and hydrogen as fast as possible. The mixed gas with oxygen and hydrogen will be directed to the engine with a sealed pipe.

The engine will work analogously to a normal gasoline engine with 4 strokes, intake, compress, combustion, and emission. The exception is that the emitted gas is vaporized H2O instead of CO2, H2O, NO and NO2.

The emitted vapor will not go into the air. Instead, it will be collected and recycled to the water tank after it is cooled down.

Good impermeability is required for the path when the mixed gas is generated to the intake nozzle, and the path where the vapor is emitted to the point where it is cooled down

The electricity to ionize the water can be from any kind of battery. The electrical energy is the ultimate source of the energy. The battery can be recharged with the power generated from a thermoelectric ceramic covering around the engine, so as to improve the efficiency of the entire system.

The advantage of this solution against the EV is no high voltage battery is required. For ionizing the water to generate the hydrogen and oxygen, very low voltage like 5v or 12v would work. However, in an EV system, very high voltage like 400v DC or higher is required. This brings challenges for battery management and cell balancing. Imbalanced cell in the module would greatly reduce the battery life as well as the efficiency caused by either passive or active balancing.
