Problem Statement:

Present methods of root canal (ENDODONTIC) treatment involves the use of drill bit to drill the teeth and broaches (files) to clean the decayed pulp. Many dental studies reveals the fact that the broaching drill bit breaks and settles inside the teeth during the operation. The drill bits are made of silicon carbide which is costly and the files are complicated in shape.

Proposed solution:

Instead of using silicon carbide drill bits, the abrasive air jet can be employed to drill the hole in the teeth. Also a Digital Image Processing unit is used to locate the decayed portion of the teeth. In addition to the broaches, saline jet (or) H2O2 jet is used to remove the decayed pulp.

ADVANTAGES OF AIR ABRASION IN DENTISTRY:

Air abrasion generates no heat, sound, pressure, or vibration.
Air abrasion reduces the need for anesthesia, particularly if the cavity is shallow.
Air abrasion leaves much more of the healthy tooth tissue behind.
Air abrasion leaves the working area relatively dry, which is an advantage during the placement of composite fillings.
The procedure is relatively simple and quick.
