The automobile is the defacto mass transportation system in the USA that is strangling most cities in massive traffic and pollution. Replacing it with a rail or subway system is too expensive (right-of-ways, new bridges, tunnels, stations, etc.) and has marginal value for the average commuter. Electra-Port (electric transportation) is a mass transportation system that leverages off-the-shelf bus/trolley technology with existing roads & highways that are already installed and maintained.
Electra-Port would basically be an updated trolley system of overhead wires for power, modern electric busses for the transporter and computer control for safety and efficiency. City-wide transportation would use the standard spoke-and-wheel system to gather and deliver commuters to retail, industrial or city center for work, shopping, etc. Neighborhoods would have Electra-Vans, small electric-powered busses, with the power wires suspended from modified lamp posts and use embedded magnets for computer-driverless operation. The neighborhood commuters would be delivered to the spoke-bus hubs where they would transfer to Electra-Carriers, larger busses, for further travel to work, shopping, sports, etc.
Electra-Port is flexible and easily modified as population and development needs change. Conventional automobiles and trucks could still use the same roads and highways. Intercity travel would utilize the interstate highway system with the addition of the overhead trolley wires for power and large Electra-Trains, very large busses, for volume transportation. Tractor-trailers and cars could be modified smart Electra-Hybrids able to use the trolley wires with electric motors for long distances and then switch to internal engines for local operation. Electra-Regenerative braking would operate through the trolley power grid, not requiring heavy, expensive batteries in each vehicle. The Electra-Port system could be installed in phases and funded locally due to its low cost (millions not billions of dollars) and minimal construction needs. Requirements are the existing roads & highways, multiple sizes of electric busses, minimal bus hubs, the overhead trolley wires and computer operation. Transportation related pollution in cities could be dramatically reduced since the power stations would manage it as part of their electric generation. Significant reduction in the annual loss of 35,000+ lives due to traffic related accidents could be achieved. The daily consumption of millions of barrels of imported oil for automotive transportation could be decreased freeing up monies that are kept in the USA for other important needs. Electra-Port is a cost-effective efficient solution system to the mass transportation needs of cities and Intra cities in the USA that utilizes off-the-shelf technology with existing transportation infrastructure and electricity as the power source.
