PURPOSE: TO CREATE LIFT FOR A LUNAR SURFACE VEHICLE WITHOUT UTILIZING A DOWNWARD EXHAUST BLAST, THEREBY SPARING LUNAR GEOLOGICAL SITE INTEGRITY.

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS:

SHOWS AN ASSEMBLY CONSISTING OF AT LEAST TWO STANDARD COMBUSTION CHAMBERS, EACH ONE OF WHICH IS MOUNTED ON OPPOSITE ENDS OF A ROTATING METAL TUBE.

EACH CHAMBER IS FED FUEL AND OXIDIZER THROUGH TUBES EQUIPPED WITH AN ON/OFF FLAP TYPE VALVE.

EACH OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS HAS AN ON-BOARD IGNITION DEVICE, SUCH AS A SPARK PLUG.

EACH COMBUSTION CHAMBER IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH VENT HOLES SET FURTHER DOWN THE TUBE.

THE METAL TUBE IS SET ROTATING. THIS CAUSES THE FIRST COMBUSTION CHAMBER TO PASS THE IGNITION POINT AT THE TOP OF THE ASSEMBLY.

THERE, THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER IGNITES ITS MIXTURE OF FUEL AND OXIDIZER, WHICH HAS BEEN COMPRESSED BY CENTRIFUGAL FORCES GENERATED BY THE SPINNING TUBE.

THE RESULTING DETONATION INSTANTLY SHUTS OFF THE FUEL MIXTURE IN THE SAME WAY AS A VALVE FLAP ON A PULSE JET ENGINE DOES.

THE DETONATION ALSO IMPARTS A MOMENTARY UPWARD KICK AGAINST THE TOP OF THE CHAMBER, PULLING THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY UP WITH IT.

ORDINARILY, THE RESULTING EXHAUST GASES WOULD COUNTERACT THIS UPWARD FORCE BY STRIKING THE LOWER PARTS OF THE ASSEMBLY, SUCH AS THE ROTOR HUB.

BUT THE CENTRIFUGAL FORCES GENERATED BY THE ROTATING TUBE WORK AGAINST THE EXHAUST GASES, FORCING THEM OUT THE VENT HOLES BEFORE STRIKING ANY OTHER PART OF THE ASSEMBLY. THIS GREATLY REDUCES THE DOWNWARD REACTION FORCE THEY WOULD NORMALLY CAUSE.

THESE SAME VENTED GASES WILL ALSO IMPART FURTHER ROTATION TO THE TUBE AS THEY EXIT THE VENT HOLES AT HIGH VELOCITY.

HAVING DETONATED, THE CHAMBER ROTATES A CERTAIN DISTANCE AND REOPENS ITS FUEL/OXIDIZER FLOW VALVE IN PREPARATION FOR ANOTHER IGNITION.

THE NEXT CHAMBER ROTATES INTO POSITION AND REPEATS THE CYCLE.

THE FINAL EFFECT WILL BE A REPETITIVE, UPWARD FORCE ON THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY.

THIS CONTINUING CYCLE OF SINGLE DETONATIONS WILL CAUSE VIBRATION, BUT THESE VIBRATIONS CAN BE SMOOTHED OUT BY INCREASING THE SPEED OF ROTATION, WHICH INCREASES THE FREQUENCY AT WHICH THE CHAMBERS IGNITE.

THIS CAN ALSO BE ACCOMPLISHED BY ADDING EXTRA COMBUSTION CHAMBERS TO THE ROTOR, SIMILAR TO A ROTARY ENGINE.

IF A NUMBER OF THESE ENGINES ARE ATTACHED TO KEY POINTS ON A LUNAR SURFACE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE WILL LIFT UPWARDS IN A BALANCED WAY.

DIRECTION, FORCE INTENSITY, AND OTHER FACTORS CAN BE CONTROLLED BY TIMING THE DETONATIONS, CHANGING THE DETONATION POINT, THE RATE OF FUEL FLOW, FUEL MIXTURE, ROTATION SPEED, AND OTHER FACTORS.

FINE TUNING OF ALL DETAILS IS KEY TO EFFICIENT ENGINE OPERATION.
