Very little has been done to improve the thermal efficiency of the internal combustion engine. Significant quantities of heat are lost through the radiator exhaust system and catalytic converter, all of which reduce the efficiency of the OTTO CYCLE ENGINE to about 30%. The 70% loss represents tremendous potentials for improvements.
This proposal is to show that metered high pressure water injection after ignition brings about:
A. Splitting of the flame propagation during combustion which reduces engine knock.
B. Increased engine power by rapid super-heated expanding steam during the powered down stroke.
C. Secondary fuels which are produced by the common water reaction, C+H2O---Heat –CO+H2. These fuels are combusted by the injection of the oxygen concentrated from air, producing a third pressure on the piston near the 90 degrees past top dead center of the crank shaft rotation creating the maximum torque.
D. Lowering nitric oxides and other pollutants because of the high heat absorbed within the cylinder which could eliminate catalytic converters.
Water is supplied from an auxiliary tank through a bicycle valve. A vacuum is developed by the compression of the bellows in the water chamber during the intake cycle of the engine. During the compression cycle, the spring keeps the bellows compressed. The bellows expand during the high pressure of the ignition which increases the pressure in the water chamber injecting water into the cylinder through the poppet valve.
POTENTIAL COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS
The increase in thermal efficiency using this water injection igniter plug would:
1. Reduce pollutants
2. Increase horsepower at slower engine speeds
3. Eliminate the catalytic converter but still be within the anticipated pollution standards. By eliminating the catalytic converter, it would improve miles per gallon and cause less stress on the engine parts.
The additional cost of such a system would be insignificant. The demands for the improvements to meet the Clean Air Act could become a potential multimillion dollar market to the parts maker. The savings in fuel could be another mega market for retrofits to existing vehicles thus extending the world’s oil resources. This device would adapt to all types of automobile engines including diesels.
