Most traditional methods of producing electricity are too expensive to build and maintain for the many developing countries of the world. Although many of these countries have rivers that could be dammed for hydroelectric power the cost would be too great. In addition to the cost most of these rivers lack the height required for hydroelectric power. Hydroelectric Dams rely on the elevation change from above and below the dam to provide the power required to turn a turbine. An alternative to conventional hydroelectric power generators is the Low Height Hydro-Pneumatic Dam. The Low Height Hydro-Pneumatic Dam uses volume of water instead of pressure to generate the energy required. The Dam can be made from readily available materials and has few moving parts. It can also be installed easily and requires almost no maintenance. This Dam is environmentally friendly and does not stop flow causing sediment buildup or warming of the water. The operation of the Low Height Hydro-Pneumatic Dam is simple and uses the flow of water in and out of the dam as a pneumatic pump that is fed into a pneumatic turbine. The incoming water displaces the air contained in the dam and that air is forced up and out the piping to the turbine. When the dam is full, a float mechanism opens a valve that begins emptying the dam. The Low Height Hydro-Pneumatic Dam maximizes efficiency by producing flow while both filling and emptying providing the highest possible air flow to the turbine. The direction of the incoming and outgoing air is controlled by check valves. The check valves cause the incoming and outgoing air to always travel through the turbine in the same direction. The pneumatic turbine then turns a generator that produces electricity. This Dam can provide low cost power using a rivers or stream with a good return on investment. The Low Height Hydro-Pneumatic Dam could be the solution for a simple method of generating electricity from a stream or river.
